Melissa Hladek (pronouns: she/her) is an experienced licensed professional clinical counselor supervisor, licensed art therapist, board-certified art therapist, and certified specialist in perinatal mental health and dialectical behavior therapy who works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups. Her specialty interests include girls’ and women’s issues, trauma, wellness and development, and integrating creativity and positive psychology into counseling practice. She uses treatment approaches that are evidence-based and uniquely tailored to each client.
Melissa earned her bachelor’s degree in fine and performing arts from Youngstown State University, and her master’s degree in counseling and art therapy from Ursuline College. She is currently earning her doctorate degree at Walden University in counselor education and supervision.
Since 2016, Melissa has gained clinical work experience in private practice, school settings, and community mental health settings. Further clinical experience includes diverse populations in school settings, homeless shelters, women’s groups, and developing youth and adolescent treatment groups.
Melissa provides clinical supervision for students and professionals including CTs, LPCs, LPCCs, ATR-Ps, and ATRs. Melissa offers individual and group supervision.
Outside of clinical and supervision work, Melissa teaches in the Counseling and Art Therapy Master’s program at Ursuline College.
Melissa has created student-focused and professional trainings and workshops as well as presented at Local, Regional, State, and National conferences on topics related to clinical practice, Ethics, and Supervision in the Counseling and Art Therapy professions.
Melissa’s approach to counseling and supervision is relational, behavioral, and grounded in strengths-based approaches because she believes that growth and healing are the result of connection, acceptance, and willingness. In addition to being a non-judgmental, compassionate listener, she integrates creativity, symbolism and metaphor, humor, psychoeducation, and advocacy into sessions.
Melissa has provided master’s-level classroom-supervision for clinical and internship students. Melissa continues to provide clinical site-supervision for internship students and dependently licensed professionals. Her approach to supervision is creativity-based and rooted in feminist and behavioral theory.
